A fire broke out at Weldman’s Shoemaker Shop on East Washington near Third. While the building was destroyed, the firemen performed “efficiently”, and the ropes and police kept civilians out of the way. Burgess Shillito, in a speech at the Hope banquet a few days later, said the fire was better managed, and there was less water damage.
