The Washington House, on the corner of 2nd and LWE burns in a potential arson fire. The fire took the top 2 floors, and resulted in huge amounts of water on the lower floors. The building was ultimately declared unsafe and was torn down later that year. The Washington House was built in 1870, and was one of Chambersburg’s most famous landmarks. Over the years it hosted many famous guests including Jimmy Stewart, Douglas Fairbacks, Jr, and Mary Pickford, and it was known as one of the finest hotels with the finest cuisine in the Cumberland Valley.
