As much of the area dealt with steady rain throughout Sunday, Chambersburg Fire Department crews responded to a water rescue on West Commerce Street.
Assistant Chief 49 of Franklin Fire Company was in the area and witnessed a vehicle enter standing water in the roadway, leaving it disabled. Company 1 units were alerted and arrived on scene within two minutes of dispatch. Upon arrival, members donned personal flotation devices (PFDs) and entered the water to reach the vehicle. Crews safely removed the occupant and carried them to the opposite side of the incident, where Squad 41 personnel were standing by. No additional services were needed. Engine 1-1 remained on scene briefly before clearing. Reminder: Never attempt to drive through standing or flooded roadways. Water depth can be difficult to judge, and even a small amount of moving water can create dangerous conditions. Turn around and find another route.
