Chambersburg Fire Department units and mutual aid were dispatched just before noon to the 100 block of Derbyshire Street for a report of smoke inside a building. While units were responding, Franklin County DES advised that smoke was reported inside the residence near a dryer vent.
Company 1 units arrived and observed normal conditions from the exterior before beginning an investigation. Crews located smoke inside the building and worked to identify its source. Squad 41 (Franklin Fire Company) arrived and began conducting searches of the apartments. Engine 13-2 (Letterkenny) and Engine 17-2 (New Franklin) arrived and assisted with securing an additional water supply and deploying an additional hoseline. Squad 8 (Marion) established the Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). Crews located a small fire in a crawl space at the rear of the building and quickly extinguished it. Positive-pressure ventilation was then utilized to remove smoke from the apartments. Firefighters operated on scene for approximately one hour before Command 1 (Assistant Chief Myers) placed all units back in service.
