Engine 1-1, Tower 1 and Ambulance 1-8 were sent to the unit block of Lincoln Way West for a fire alarm. Units arrived and began to investigate the source of the alarm. While investigated, crews located smoke in the back stairwell. Engine 1-2 and Engine 13-2 were requested to assist. Ambulance 1-8 crew advanced a line inside and stood-by. Engine 13-2's crew arrived and assisted with investigating the first floor. Crews found discarded smoking materials on all floors in the stairwell. Crews ventilated the area and reset the alarms. Units operated for about 40 minutes.
